J. Fielding Reed Scholarships & Jimmy and Bunny Champion Academic Achievement Award & The Ray Hays Family Scholarship

Awarded by the Georgia Plant Food Educational Society (GPFES)

Information

Scholarships 4 ($2000) and Award ($3000) to be awarded to an undergraduate student in soil and plant science or related field of study. Scholarships and Award are made directly to the student and are independent of any other assistantships, scholarships or awards to the student.

Eligibility requires that the student is attending a degree-granting institution in Georgia. Priority will be given to the relevance to GPFES educational objectives and includes the disciplines of agronomy, horticulture, ecology, soil fertility, soil chemistry, plant physiology, and other areas related to soil fertility and plant nutrition.

A complete Application Packet should include the completed application form, transcripts of all college courses (including cumulative GPA), and three letters of support, of which one must be from the applicant’s advising professor. Submit all documents, transcript, and support letters in one packet by October 21 of the current calendar year to the address provided on the application form.

Important: The description of the applicant’s academic interest and agricultural experiences provided on the application form provides GPFES with an evaluation of the applicant’s relationship to Georgia agriculture and the applicant’s expectations and plans for the future.

Scholarship and Award winners will be notified and the checks will be presented by the GPFES.

All winners are highly encouraged to attend the GPFES Annual Winter Meeting Lunch in January to be recognized by the GPFES membership.

Dr. J. Fielding Reed Scholarships are provided by the GPFES in honor of Dr. J. Fielding Reed (deceased in 1999), who retired as President of the Potash & Phosphate Institute, served as Professor and teacher at the University of Georgia, President of GPFES and Mentor to many of the members of the GPFES.

The Academic Achievement Award – Mr. Jimmy has passed away.
The Academic Achievement Award is provided by the GPFES in honor of Jimmy and Jacqueline “Bunny” Champion for their outstanding and long-term service to the GPFES. Bunny Champion passed away in 2008 and Jimmy Champion, former long-time president of GPFES passed away in 2021. This award will be given to the applicant deemed most outstanding from the total pool of applications.

The Ray Hays Family Scholarship is provided by the GPFES honoring the Ray Hays Family for their outstanding and long-term service to GPFES. As Hays LTI of Camilla, Georgia is a key manufacturer and distributer of fertilizer and other agricultural equipment, students with a background and desire to go into the agricultural equipment field will receive special consideration.

The purpose of the GPFES is to keep its members informed, promote agricultural education programs, cooperate with all agricultural agencies including the University of Georgia, and promote agronomically and environmentally sound use of plant food by farmers.
